
In May 2023, the NGO "Northern Cultural Capital," in collaboration with the USAID Foundation, implemented the project "Chernihiv is Europe," giving the residents of Chernihiv a two-day open-air festival in four districts of the war-torn city. This project became a symbol of revival and hope, uniting the people of Chernihiv in shared joy.
The open-air celebrations were preceded by scientific meetings, including a round table "Culinary Culture of Chernihiv Region: Reconstruction for Revival" at the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Chernihiv City Council and "European Studies" at the O. Lazarevsky Institute of History and Socio-Humanitarian Disciplines. These meetings provided a deep meaning to the festive events, combining a scientific approach with cultural activities. And on May 20 and 21, 2023, simultaneous celebrations filled with various activities took place in four districts of Chernihiv.
The Alley of Masters was open, where the famous potter Oleh Lutsuk, now a Defender of Ukraine, conducted master classes. The highlight of the alley was a thematic exhibition of paintings by Chernihiv artists and students of the city's art institutions under the curatorship of Maria Rybina-Tkach. There was also an information photo exhibition about Chernihiv's partner cities, which emphasized international solidarity and support.
The days of "Chernihiv is Europe" were enriched with a plein air event near the Opanasenko House and a guided tour with certified guide Lesya Fedorenko. For lovers of outdoor activities, an interactive quest was held on the territory of Val and a breakdancing competition "League of Chernihiv." And for those interested in historical heritage, there were "peer-to-peer" tours and a walk through the Boldin Mountains and the Trinity Cathedral.
Animation programs for children were held in the Berezovyi Hai, Sherstianka, and Masany districts, and concert programs at the end. The highlight was a large open-air film screening in the Berezovyi Hai district, which brought joy and inspiration. On May 21, 2023, the "Solidarity Network" cultural and artistic project for the older generation was launched, as well as an open-air film screening.
And to conclude the "Chernihiv is Europe" initiative, on May 27, 2023, in the hall of the S. Vilkonskyi City Music School, the Saturday evening "Academy of Ukrainian Music" was held under the patronage of the UNESCO National Commission. Two sections of Ukrainian academic music, the first - Daria Shevchenko, violin (Odesa), the second - performers of the National Academy (Kyiv). Link to the social media page here.
